Created from the desire to produce The Best Car in the World,Rolls-Royce has long attracted the attention of the world’s greatest. The list of owners reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the 20th century, and continues to do so in the 21st.
With Charles Rolls’ aristocratic connections, it’s no surprise that Rolls-Royce motor cars were a favourite among royal households around the world. The association between the British royal family and Rolls-Royce extends back to 1919, when the Prince of Wales (later to be crowned King Edward VIII) received his first Rolls-Royce: a Barker-bodied limousine.
All are painted in royal claret livery, and when chauffeuring the Queen, the kneeling Spirit of Ecstasy is replaced with the royal ceremonial mascot – a solid silver St George and the dragon. The 1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Landaulet featured in the fairy-tale wedding of Prince Rainier III of Monaco to Grace Kelly. The Monégasque people gave the couple the cream and black car as a wedding present.
